Things to do at the cottage
This is a very special place and you will find, as we do, that once you cross the water to the cottage you relax from all cares, which somehow get left on the other side. You could just enjoy breakfasting on the terrace watching the river activity or reading one of the many books on the shelves, walking and visiting the pubs of the village. But for young and old it is a really excellent cottage for a truly 'Swallows and Amazons' holiday. It's a place for messing about on the water, crabbing off the private quay, swimming and kayaking to local beaches as well as walking the many National Trust paths. You can also walk the coastal paths to Wembury Beach where you can rockpool to your hearts content at low tide, and bodyboard when the surf's up.
For those families with their own boat we can provide a mooring and the terrace allows those members who do not want to boat to observe much of the action.
The local farm shop (Moostone Meats - look at link) is a short walk from the cliff path above the cottage and sells the most delicious locally produced meat and vegetables and ready prepared food. The shops in the village of Newton Ferrers comprise the community run post office and store, a pharmacy, a local butcher and a cheese merchant. A Co-op shop remains open until late.
Locally, you can hire a boat with an engine to take you further afield. Click here for more details.
In the evenings, there are three pubs and a yacht club, all serving very good food. Alternatively, you can enjoy the sun setting on your own private terrace, with a barbecue and a bottle of wine or on Cellars beach with the Mew Stone as a backdrop.
If you bring a sailing day-boat or dinghy the local Yealm Yacht club runs sailing races every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning in the season. See our link to the Yacht Club.
Messing about on the River Yealm is one of the many joys of a holiday at Coastguards.
The sand bar at the entrance to the estuary is uncovered for several hours at the lowest tides and for that short time becomes a mecca for childs' play - both young and old.
