How to find the cottage
Old Coastguards cottage is located ten miles to the east of Plymouth on the River Yealm. Whilst it is situated on the Wembury bank of the river and can be accessed by track through National Trust land it is best accessed from Newton Ferrers by boat from the pontoon by the Harbour office (PL8 1BN) with parking on the road above.
Travelling south from Exeter, the M5 becomes the dual carriageway of the A38 south signposted to Plymouth. After about 28 miles on the A38 turn off on A2131 signposted to Ermington, Yealmpton and Modbury, which is shortly after a Shell garage on the right. Follow signs to Yealmpton travelling for about 9 miles. Just after entering Yealmpton turn left before Texaco petrol station signposted Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo. After about 3 miles you enter the Village of Newton Ferrers. You pass the 'Tea on the Green' and the WI Hall on your right. Ignore the turning to Noss Mayo on your left, and Court Road on your right, to stay on the road which is signposted Harbour. You pass the Church on your right and the Co-op on your left to continue along this road - Yealm Road - until you see the Yealm Hotel on your right. Park somewhere opposite along the road here and the steps down to the Harbour office and pontoon are on your left down to the river here. You will see Old Coastguard Cottages directly opposite you from the bottom of the Harbour steps.
Travelling east from Plymouth, take the A379 signposted Kingsbridge; this road leads to Brixton and Yealmpton. Just before entering Yealmpton you pass the entrance to Kitley Hotel on your right and immediately after this there is a turning on your right signposted Newton Ferrers. Take this road, which goes down a steep hill to cross a stream and up the other side until you reach a T junction. Turn right following signs to Newton Ferrers.
